Every May, Córdoba celebrates its Feria de la Salud, a weekend-long bullfighting festival that this year honours Lagartijo, the first Caliph and a true icon of Cordoba’s bullfighting tradition. Don’t miss the chance to experience it.
Córdoba is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities – and undoubtedly one of the most passionate about bullfighting. Known as the Land of the Caliphs, this nickname also extends to the legendary bullfighters who were born here and left an indelible mark on the art of tauromachia. Lagartijo, Guerrita, Machaquito, Manolete, and El Cordobés all bear the prestigious title of Caliph. In Córdoba, bullfighting has depth, pedigree, and flair – triumphing in its iconic ring, Los Califas, is a mark of honour.
This year’s official poster pays tribute to Rafael Molina “Lagartijo”, the first bullfighter to be named Caliph. Born in 1841, he became a central figure in 19th-century bullfighting, known especially for his fierce rivalry with the Granadan matador Frascuelo. At a time when bullfighting was still raw and physical, Lagartijo brought a sense of artistry to the ring, paving the way for a more elegant and aesthetic style. He retired in 1893 and passed away in Córdoba on 1 August 1900 – an anniversary that marks 125 years this year.
Though Córdoba’s feria is short, it is nothing short of exquisite. Held over one carefully curated weekend, it draws fans from across Andalusia and beyond. Thanks to modern transport links – especially the high-speed AVE train – the Feria de la Salud is becoming more and more universal, even as it coincides with Madrid’s San Isidro, one of the most important bullfighting festivals in Spain.
But Córdoba stands apart, with its own identity and flair. The company Lances de Futuro, led by José María Garzón, has crafted a compelling programme for 23–25 May.
On Friday 23 May, the spotlight shines on the next generation. Novilleros Fuentes Bocanegra and Javier Zulueta – representing Córdoba and Seville respectively – will face bulls from El Cotillo, joined by promising local talent Manuel Quintana.
Saturday 24 May brings a fascinating blend of experience and triumph. Veteran matador Miguel Ángel Perera, fairground favourite Emilio de Justo, and last year’s standout Borja Jiménez – making his debut in Córdoba – will take on bulls from the distinguished El Pilar ranch. A unique line-up that breaks from tradition, offering a refreshing contrast of styles.
The highlight of the feria comes on Sunday 25 May. Bulls from Domingo Hernández will be fought by the masterful Juan Ortega and the box-office phenomenon Andrés Roca Rey, who will be giving the alternativa (formal promotion) to Córdoba’s own Manuel Román – the local novillero with a huge following, who will become a fully-fledged matador in front of his home crowd.
Three days. Three events. Three perfect reasons to visit this beautiful city at the end of May – a place rich in charm, culture, and bullfighting heritage. What better way to spend a weekend?
